Using Linear Shaft Motors in parallel

The Nippon Pulse Linear Shaft Motor (LSM) offers several features that other linear motors available on the market do not.

Among them is the ability to drive two motors in parallel using only one encoder and one amplifier. To run traditional linear motion systems, including ball-screws, requires two drives, two controllers, and two encoders, connected together. Those requirements are eliminated with the LSM. A real world application is seen in a large aerostatic stage that is frequently used as a precision positioning system for equipment that produces flat panel displays. In this process, higher velocities and better accuracies are required to attain higher productivity and performance measures. A large aerostatic stage, for which an H-shaped frame is usually used as the base stage, is driven by two actuators, such as linear motors, with two position feedback sensors, such as linear scales, or interferometers on the scanning motion axis. A world renowned builder of glass substrates selected the Nippon Pulse Linear Shaft Motor (LSM) and three other linear motor systems to be independently tested in its new 8th-generation glass substrate. The three non-LSM motor systems were connected in the traditional setup, with each linear motor having its own linear scale and servo driver connected in a master slave arrangement. The Linear Shaft Motor on the other hand was tested with one linear scale and one servo driver. All four linear motion systems were tested with the same stage and motion control system. The only exception is that the Linear Shaft Motor uses only one scale and one servo amplifier for both X axes. Testing showed that the Linear Shaft Motor had better velocity stability, less jitter, and better settling time.

Nippon Pulse’s Linear Shaft Motor can be designed in several configurations to increase load thrust, to complete multiple complex movements on a single axis, or to run several motors on different parallel axes. In addition to the standard ‘single-drive’ layout, the Linear Shaft Motor can be easily designed into multi-drive, tandem-drive, and parallel-drive systems.

 

Tying together two or more Linear Shaft Motors in a parallel system allows users to greatly increase thrust force. When using the Linear Shaft Motor in parallel, you need only one encoder, one amplifier, and one driver, reducing costs and time as compared to what traditional linear motion systems require. 

Multiple forcers can be used on the same shaft (multi-drive system) to support complex, independent motion required by certain applications. To multiple the force thrust of you linear motion system, you’re able to use two or more forcers (coils) on the same shaft, while mechanically tied together, to form a tandem-drive system.
